DownloadsUnifi VLAN Forwarder for Windows (XP / Vista / 7)One of the main problems with Unifi at the moment is that it utilizes a protocol known as 802.1q or tagged VLANs to achieve Internet and IPTV connectivity. The PPPoE connection must be made over VLAN 500 and IPTV must connect through VLAN 600. This is the job of the DIR-615 by default, to operate on these VLANs while providing your home network with standard network connectivity. What would happen if this device fails or is improperly configured? You would totally lose Internet connectivity. It is because of these VLANs that unlike other PPPoE based services (Streamyx), you cannot make a 'dialer' in Windows and perform a direct connection when such a situation arises. As such, I have gone ahead and programmed a simple tool called the Unifi VLAN Forwarder for Windows. What this tool does is add the crucial 4-byte VLAN tag to all outgoing PPPoE connections and remove any incoming PPPoE data with VLAN tags on them. Therefore, it 'transparently' creates a VLAN for you despite your network card not actually supporting it. You will then be able to create a standard PPPoE dialer in Windows, make a direct connection to the Fiberhome/ZTE VDSL modem and connect to the Unifi network to perform crucial tasks such as checking your email or asking for help. The network performance using this experimental tool wont be good but it gets the job done and allows you to diagnose your Unifi line when you're unsure of whats causing the problem. Usage :
