MikroTik RB250GS

"The RB250GS is a low cost SOHO switch in a small plastic case. It has 5 Gigabit ethernet ports powered by an Atheros switch chip. It is powered by a new operating system designed specifically for Mikrotik Switch products - SwOS. SwOS is configurable from your web browser. It gives you all the basic functionality of a managed switch, plus more."

It also lets you get rid of that PoS DIR-615 G1 permanently :) In this guide, I will explain how to configure a MikroTIk RB250GS smart switch to completely replace the DIR-615 as a VLAN bridge. This will allow you to use any router with the Unifi service .. without affecting access to the IPTV network.

Thanks klseet from the LYN forums for providing me with two RB250GS's to test out the configuration with :) !

Initial Configuration Steps

1. Connect your PC's network card to LAN port 5 of the RB250GS switch.

2. Set your PCs IP address to 192.168.88.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

3. Open up your web browser and head over to http://192.168.88.1 .

4. The default login for this switch is the username 'admin' with a blank password.

5. Once you're in the web management interface, head over to the System tab and check the following values :

6. Ensure that the firmware version is at least version 1.2. If it isn't download this firmware update and upgrade it.

VLAN Configuration Steps

It's now time to begin the configuration of the VLANs. Please note that I've written this guide with this particular configuration in mind :

  • LAN port 1 of the RB250GS will be connected to the BTU
  • LAN port 2 of the RB250GS will be connected to the IPTV STB
  • LAN port 3 of the RB250GS will be connected to the WAN port of your own router

To get your VLAN configuration running, simply follow these settings :

Other Notes

Once you've performed the configuration, simply wire your BTU into LAN port 1, IPTV STB into LAN port 2 and the WAN port of your router into LAN port 3. You should be able to connect to the internet and the IPTV network fine :) Even though I've only used the first 3 ports of the switch, you can modify this configuration to match whatever port setup you want.
